autofocus – Wise Photographer

You point your camera at the subject, half-press the shutter, and nothing happens. The lens hunts back and forth, or worse, it locks focus on the wrong thing entirely while your actual subject sits there blurry. It always seems to happen right when you finally have the shot lined up, and you might be left wondering: why won't my camera focus? The short answer is that autofocus problems usually come down to a handful of common, fixable causes: low light, a dirty lens or contacts, the wrong AF mode for the situation, or a switch flipped to manual without you noticing. Below, you'll find the most common reasons autofocus fails, how to tell which one you're dealing with, and the fix for each. Keep reading to find out more! Why Won't My Camera Focus? Autofocus works by measuring contrast or phase difference across the sensor (or a dedicated AF sensor on older DSLRs) and moving the lens elements until that measurement peaks. When there isn't enough light, contrast, or a clear edge for it to grab onto, the system hunts back and forth, or gives up entirely. Photo by Jose P. Ortiz on Unsplash Common Causes And How To Fix Them Symptom Likely Cause Quick Fix Focus ring turns but nothing happens Lens set to manual focus Flip the AF/MF switch on the lens and body Lens hunts back and forth, never locks Low light or low-contrast subject Use a single focus point on an edge, or add light Focus locks on the wrong thing Wide-area AF mode picking the strongest contrast Switch to a single AF point on your subject Works sometimes, fails other times Dirty lens contacts Clean the metal contacts with a dry cotton swab Fine on stills, struggles tracking motion Wrong AF mode (AF-S vs AF-C) Match the mode to a still or moving subject Fails on one lens across multiple bodies Worn or failing AF motor Have the lens serviced or repaired The Lens Is Set To Manual Focus. This is the single most common cause, and the easiest to miss. Most lenses have an AF/MF switch on the barrel, and it's an easy switch to bump without noticing. Check the one on the lens itself, not just the camera body, since some cameras have their own AF/MF switch too and both need to agree. Not Enough Light. Autofocus needs contrast to grab onto, and low light flattens that contrast. If you're shooting indoors or at dusk, try switching to a single, well-lit focus point rather than a wide area, or use your camera's AF-assist beam if it has one. Low-Contrast Or Repetitive Subjects. A plain wall, a clear sky, or anything without a defined edge gives autofocus nothing to measure. Point the focus point at an edge or a patterned area at the same distance as your subject, lock focus, then recompose. Dirty Lens Contacts Or Elements. A smudge on the front element can soften contrast enough to confuse autofocus, but the more common culprit is dirty electronic contacts where the lens meets the body. Wipe the lens with a microfiber cloth, and gently clean the metal contacts on both the lens mount and the body with a dry cotton swab. The Wrong AF Mode For The Situation. Single-shot AF (AF-S) locks focus once and holds it, which fights you if your subject is moving. Continuous AF (AF-C) keeps adjusting as the subject moves, which hunts unnecessarily on a still subject. Match the mode to what's actually in front of you. An Obstructed AF Sensor Or Viewfinder. A finger, strap, or camera bag partially covering the lens or the AF sensor window will confuse the system in ways that look exactly like a focus failure. Worth ruling out before anything else, since it's the quickest fix on this list. Old Or Buggy Firmware. Camera and lens manufacturers do release firmware updates that fix autofocus behavior, particularly for newer lenses paired with older camera bodies. Check the manufacturer's site for your specific model if nothing above solves it. Autofocus performance is directly tied to available contrast and light. Nearly every camera hunts more in dim conditions, so it's expected behavior rather than a fault, though a well-lit AF-assist beam can help close the gap. Why does my camera keep focusing on the background instead of my subject? This usually means your camera is set to a wide-area autofocus mode that grabs whatever has the strongest contrast in the frame. Switching to a single AF point and placing it directly on your subject usually solves it. Can a lens itself just go bad and stop autofocusing? Yes. Lens autofocus motors do wear out or fail over time, especially on older or heavily used lenses. If a lens won't autofocus on multiple camera bodies while your other lenses work fine, the lens itself is the likely cause. Does image stabilization affect autofocus? Not directly. They're separate systems, but a lens with a stabilization fault can sometimes produce symptoms that look similar to a focus problem, like a soft or shifting image even after focus has locked. Final Thoughts So, why won't your camera focus? Most of the time it's one of a few usual suspects: manual focus left on by accident, not enough light or contrast, a dirty contact, or an AF mode that doesn't match your subject. Work through the list above in order, and you'll likely find the culprit before you need to consider anything more serious like a lens repair. Now get back out there and get your shot in focus.
